Not only is this homemade version of Honey Garlic Chicken more affordable, but it tastes much better! The chicken pieces can be prepared quickly in one skillet and are ready to serve in only 15 minutes, thanks to their sticky and sweet sauce. It’s simple uses minimal ingredients, making it a great choice for quick weeknight dinners.
Ingredient Notes & Tips:
- The most basic variety of chicken thighs to use is the ones that are skinless and boneless. You can also use chicken breasts, but be aware that they cook even faster, so keep an eye on them and adjust the cooking time appropriately.
- You do need both butter and olive oil. Butter adds even more flavor to the sautéed garlic while oil keeps the chicken from sticking to the pan and produces a gorgeous golden crust.
- The honey garlic sauce’s foundation is made of soy sauce and honey. The characteristic bright, sweet flavor and sticky finish require honey. The flavor won’t be quite as vibrant if you use maple syrup in its instead.
- Alternatively, if you’re gluten-free, use tamari, coconut aminos, or gluten-free soy sauce.
- To aid in thickening the sauce, use cornstarch. Arrowroot is equally effective.

Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces and sprinkle it with salt, if you haven't previously.
In a skillet set over medium heat, add the olive oil, add the chicken, and cook until the chicken is cooked through and the outside is golden brown.
Prepare the sauce in a glass measuring cup or bowl by whisking together honey, soy sauce, sriracha, and cornstarch while the chicken cooks.
After the chicken is cooked, sauté the garlic and butter in the skillet for one minute.
Lower the heat to a low level and add the sauce, stirring to coat the chicken. Reduce the heat to medium if the sauce isn't thickening, and remove the skillet from the heat and add 1 tablespoon of water to thin it out if it's thickening too quickly.
Add some green onions on top and savor!
